The rankings of the top female tennis players in 2016 is still dominated by Serena Williams as the impressive American still dominates the world of tennis as far as the female game is concerned.
Below we take a look at the current WTF rankings and see who is putting Serena under pressure for the coveted number one place.
Serena Williams
Serena Williams is boosted by the best serve in the women’s game and is currently second in the all time Grand Slam singles titles list with 21. She won her first major singles title when she was 17 defeating Martina Hingis in the US Open.
Between 2002 and 2003 she won four consecutive Grand Slam singles titles and she is only one of five women to have ever held all four major titles simultaneously. She also added a a career Grand Slam to her list of achievements.
After a blip between 2005 and 2007 having only won two titles she is now back in force and leading the pack.
Agnieszka Radwanska
A very clever player with excellent court sense, Radwanska has been compared to Martina Hingis.
Her career 12 titles have come sporadically; three in 2008, three Premier level titles in 2011, three championships in 2012. Her biggest title of her career was in Miami in which she did not drop a set.
She reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 2013 losing to Sabine Lisicki and later in the same year in Seoul won the WTA title, the third of the year and the 13th of her career.
Angelique Kerber
Although never surpassing the third round of her first 15 Grand Slam tournaments, but found her form in New York to reach the 2011 US Open semifinals.That result as well as the subsequent semifinal appearances in Dallas and Osaka helped her crack the top 30.
In 2012 Kerber won her first WTA indoor title in Paris, and followed that up to win the Copenhagen final to lift her to 14 in the world rankings. In the same year she managed to get to the Wimbledon semifinal. Then in 2013 she won in Linz for her third career title.
Garbine Muguruza
Tall and very powerful, Muguruza loves playing from the baseline and considers her serve as probably her best weapon.
Her first career title was in 2014 in Hobart, where she played through eight consecutive matches, all in straight sets to win. In 2015 Muguruza made it to the Wimbledon final but lost to Serena Williams in two straight sets.
Victoria Azarenka
Nicknamed Vika for her fiery temper, Azarenka is an aggressive baseliner known for her blistering shots and loud shrieks.
15 of her 16 career titles have come on hard courts, in 2009 she won her first three singles titles and moved into the top 10.
In 2011 she reached her career best of no.3 rank, she won three titles and runner up in Madrid and the WTA Championships and reaching her first major semifinal at Wimbledon.
Azarenka secured her first major title and reached no.1 ranking when she defeated Maria Sharapova in the Australian Open in 2012.
